The city is trying to fix the way its 911 system handles fires by letting FDNY employees listen in on calls to police operators so help isn't sent to the wrong address.
The change comes after three major fires - including two that took a total of six lives - in which firefighters said response was delayed by incorrect information.
The FDNY and Mayor Bloomberg have voiced support for the Unified Call Taker system, which started in May.

The NYPD and FDNY announced an overhaul of their new computerized 911 system yesterday after a series of errors led to deadly delays in responding to fires.
Under the Unified Call Taking system, which went online in May, callers are only able to speak to 911 operators as opposed to fire dispatchers who are well-acquainted with FDNY protocols and equipment.
After the call is received, the operator inputs the information, including the address, and then transmits it to a fire dispatcher.

West Telemarketing, 1975 Harlem Road, will be shutting down on Dec. 18, putting 239 employees out of work.
The Loves Park facility handled incoming customer services calls on behalf of a large financial services customer.
West Corp. Spokesman Dave Pleiss attributed the closure of the Loves Park center to a drop in its clients' call volume.
